Depict! Analysis

What was the task?

I had to make a 90 second short film for a competition/company called depict.

What was the idea?

Our idea was to have a man write a letter to god and for it to be rejected and sent back down. The man was going to die and go to heaven and him to be puzzled to why he's in heaven. God was to tell hi it was a joke and then send him down back to earth.

What was your inspiration?

There was no inspiration.

What planning documentation / processes did you have to complete?

We had to complete a various amount of pre-production paperwork that needs to be completed before we were aloud to film. These pieces of paperwork included location reeces and releases, talent releases, a budget sheet, prop/costume list, a shot list, a storyboard, a script, risk assessments and a production schedule.

Did your finished work reflect on the planning you had completed?

Not completely no, due to lack of crew we had to improvise throughout the filing of our film, so we had to bend from our pre-production paperwork slightly, we also had to condense our film down by half to fit it into the time allocation for the Depict!

What changes did you make to planning and why?

We made a few changes to the plan regarding to casting, so we could go ahead with our film. The reason we did this was that we were short on cast members, so we needed to re-allocate roles to suit our shortages.

What do you think is the most successful part of the project?

The most successful part of our short film was the visual effects we added into post production. I really liked how they fitted into our film so well.

What would you change or do differently if you were to undertake the task again?

If i was to undertake this task again I would defiantly add some music to add a collective feeling/mood to the film. I think it would have made a better product and more audio appealing to the audience.

What did you enjoy most about the project?

I enjoyed playing "God" for the most part. I enjoyed wearing the costume and getting to play such an "important" role.

Was there anything you did not enjoy?

I didn't like the pre-production paperwork for the most part. I thought that it was the least exciting part of the unit compared to the shooting and editing aspects.

List a few examples, from the class, of aspects that were praised?

Our peers really liked my groups special effects, they thought they were done really well and it fitted into what was going on.

List a few of the aspects from your peers that were marked for areas for improvement?

The class in general didn't really get the story or plot through the movie. This was because we had to cut our film by almost half to fit it into the 90 second allowance we were allowed to have for the film. Next time we would've planned to have a shorter film compared to what we done this time.
