College Video Evaluation

Content/mise-en-scene

In my college video I decided to do focus on the photography department at my college because that is the subject I'm most passionate about. So obviously the majority of my filming was done inside of the classroom. Since the photography classroom I filmed in is a very popular place for students to do work and photo shoots I didn't have complete control on how the classroom looked at any given time. Because of this I could only film with what was going on in the classroom at one given time. Which has it's pros and cons. A pro is that there is a lot going on in the classroom so their was always a lot to film but a con is I couldn't always film what I wanted to because people were using it for example. With this college video I decided to focus on the student work and also the equipment the students work so my target audience, year 11's and their parents know to what standard their students should be working at and how their kids can achieve such good work. One thing me nor my class didn't really like was the sign at the start. I feel that sign wasn't really for students who are not at the college or their parents because they wouldn't know what SET was until they had a few classes with their teachers.

Camerawork

The camerawork in my production was in my opinion a bit shaky. I don't think it was the best because a lot of my shots were static, which didn't look good compared and put aside moving shots. Other shots were very slightly out of focus which was fairly annoying. Especially when the shots were focused on the view finder looked in focus. Not only to myself, but to other people as well. There were some good shots in my video some of which I was very happy with, for example the pan shot of the darkroom I think was particularly good because of the consistent speed of the pan and the fact it was well lit and in focus. With shot distance I decided I wanted to stay quiet close for this video so my audience could get a real feel to what the Photography department was like. I allow anted to keep shot lengths fairly short so I could get as much of the department in as possible.

Editing and use of post-production effects

To edit my college video I used Adobe Premiere Pro. Where I used a number of editing effects including fade ins and fade outs, zooming and auto-focusing tool. I think the editing side of my video was done very well and these effects made my video look better than it actually was in my opinion. I also used an effect called cross dissolve in most of my shots so that they would flow better than if they just cut to one-another which would make my video look very cheap and unprofessional. With my editing I was trying to get a pretty slow-ish pace chilled out video my audience would enjoy and I think that went very well. Especially with my cool vibed music going the whole way through the video.

Sound

I decided I didn't want any voice-overs or speech of any kind in my video, so I just had a background song I got from a website called BenSounds. BenSounds offer a wide range of music for free as long as you credit them at the end. That's why you can see a credit at the end of my video. I think my music was really well suited to what my video was and I think my choice of music was one of the best parts of my video.

Graphics

I had a number of different graphics through my video. To start with I had a title sequence which I thought was fantastic and really sold my video to my audience right from the off. At the end of my video I also had rolling credits which I think worked really well also. In my opinion these credits made my video look really professional. Also right at the end I credited my BenSounds music which I had to do. I really liked my title sequence because of the font I used to make it look really unique and it appealed to my audience. From my feedback from my class they all said that my title was one of the best bits of my video.

My class overall quiet looked my video. They all liked the variety of different shot lengths in my video, my title sequence and my music. One thing they all came together and said that wasn't good about my video was the mise-en-scene. They particularly didn't like the fact that parts of my video were dark and fuzzy. As I said above I couldn't control that but if I end up shooting it again, I will take more care with the mise-en-scene in my video.

In conclusion I think that my college video was pretty good, my audience liked it and I think it was a well-rounded video. If I had the chance to shoot my college video again I would defiantly make sure that all of ym shots ar in focus before I shoot to the best of my ability.

Technologies in the Film and TV Industries

Technology has developed greatly over the last 10 or so years, turning the entertainment industry from very hands on, challenging and expensive to easier practices we have in the 2020’s.

Consumer products such as cameras and editing software’s have developed greatly turning film to digital technology. Companies like Nikon and Sony have greatly developed their cameras turning them into digital machines where you can take a photo with just one click. Also, companies like Adobe have greatly improved their editing software’s like Premiere Pro and Photoshop, turning them into digital platforms as well. There are many pros and many cons to this upgrade in technology, but most creatives see these changes as a good thing making this industry more easily accessible and easier to make a career from. But some industry professionals don’t like these ‘upgrades’ because it requires less skill to complete them and it challenges their jobs.

Satellite and Cable has also developed greatly since it first started with companies like Sky, BT and Virgin offering packages to customers including a wide range of channels not found on the freeview.  Cable television is a system of delivering television programming to consumers via radio frequency signals transmitted through coaxial cables, or in more recent systems, light pulses through fibre-optic cables. This is a good way to do this because connections are always strong thanks to internet providers setting up boxes all around the country to boost these signals. Nearly everyone thinks this is a good way of going forward because of the strong signals I just mentioned but people do not like how expensive it is to run which makes some people stick with freeview television.

The Internet has grown massively over the last 10-15 years. This is thanks to multiple sources of film and television content such as YouTube, Netflix and setups like Sky Movies just to name a few. Although these are all legal uses of the internet, the internet is also used illegally with stuff like the dark web consistently on the rise over the last few years. The Internet is especially popular with young people and scientists argue that us as a population largely depends on the internet to survive. This is also causing the older generation to rely on it more to connect with love ones during times of crisis, Covid-19 for example. As I mentioned the Internet is very much relied upon which makes it a staple for everyday life which is why so many people love it and get mad when it’s not working. This leads some people to believe that the internet is a bad thing due to our reliance on it.

There have also been technological developments in the terms of 3/4D cinema which has led to exciting viewing experiences for people all around the world. Along with this there has also been the sharp uprising of home cinema, with the wealthy amongst our society getting to enjoy these luxuries. People really like this evolving technology but don’t like how expensive they are to run and maintain.

The way technology has changed what we consume is a big factor into this emerging popularity into these technologies. Services like pay-per-view, on demand viewing and catch up have been growing in popularity over the last 5-10 years. Pay-per-view involves services like Sky Sports offer one of payments for events such as boxing. These tend to be successful because they only normally do this with popular boxers like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua which attracts mass audiences because there is normally no other way these can be watched, legally anyway. On-demand is a way in which you can watch a show you’ve missed because you were at work, asleep etc. There is also a difference between streaming and downloading content. Streaming you need internet access or 3/4G whereas downloading you only need internet when its downloading. So, you can watch it in places such as planes and places with no internet. You are also now able to record your favourite films or tv shows but this isn’t as popular as the two I’ve just mentioned. In doing this we have given our money and watch time to services like Netflix and what I’ve mentioned above. Because they offer a lot of content, all you can watch for a cheap monthly/yearly price. These are very good places to watch films and tv shows legally. Most people really enjoy these services because of the price but some people are concerned this is driving away people who use to watch television and go to the cinema because of the popularity of Netflix exclusive films and TV shows such as Rim of the World and Stranger Things.

Complaint Letter.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you today to express my disbelief  at reading your job advert for the apprentice digital video production producer. Firstly I would like to start off with your contract. The contracted hours are way to vague. Normal jobs the contracted hours will be a lot more certificated, for example between 35-40 hours a week would be more suitable for full time work, if that's what your job is I can't tell? Confidentiality clauses are very important as you would agree but I majorly disagree with what I've seen in this advert. It doesn't mention anything about basic clauses you should see in an advert like this. There should be basic clauses such as my ideas should belong to you and anything I film you won as well, it doesn't mention any of this so you could be potentially worse off if you hire me to film for you.

The equality act (2010) is also something I would like to mention, in you advert you have stated that whoever you hire must be below 30 years of age. This goes directly against the equality act and is illegal. Also you have said that the person you hire must be Christian. This is illegal also! There is also the fact that you have not stated any health and safety laws I would have to amend to. You have not mentioned that during the filming for this video you want I would not be protected. For example if one of these 'male rapists' was to attack me you have not mentioned if I would be covered or not, which is appealing! Setups like trade unions are here to support people like me and they certainly won't appreciate this job advert.

Although I am aware that it is your job to come up with ethical practices for work, and this is not covered by the law, you have not mentioned in your advert to give me any sort of indication  that I would be protected in any way, and also my biggest complaint of all, you have made males to seem like the only people on the planet who are able to rape people, and also that females are the only people who can be raped. This is quiet frankly very messed up that you can think this and also stereotyping that only young people do this also, you're giving us a bad repetition. You know that young people are not portrayed in the best of light in the media and you are not helping that.

As you should be aware, Ofcom have 10 main broadcasting codes, if you don't know what they are, I'll let you look that up yourself. On the very first line of their code of conduct for under 18's it directly says, 'Material that might impair the physical, mental or moral development of under 18 must not be broadcast'. I know you don't have to strictly follow these rules but interviewing children about rape, as you've mentioned in your job advert will harm them at the bare minimum, mentally and their moral development of any child, especially a 'female victim'. Obviously you need to keep in mind about the Obscene Publications Act 1959 which makes it illegal to have pornography in productions unless it's rated 18+, I think. The BBFC will very likely also age restrict this video because of the content, I would imagine a 15 rated because their is no actual pornography but sensitive subjects are being touched upon.

Yours sincerely,

Louis Western.

Ownership Concepts and Funding Types

Ownership Concepts:
Public Service Broadcasting (PSB)
In the 1920's the British government wanted to set up a radio broadcasting system. A man called Lord Reith decided to look over to the US to take influence from the US model and they didn't like it. They thought it was full of low quality content to attract mass audiences. The UK government decided they did not want to fund broadcasting companies directly because they were scared they could be called bias by the public so they decided to set up the licence fee the public would pay which would go straight to the broadcasting companies. Lord Reith was named the first director general of the BBC and said "We have founded a system based on public service rather than public exploitation." The BBC's remit is to "Inform, Educate and Entertain" in that order.

Commercial Broadcasting
In 1955 under the Churchill government they conservatives decided they wanted to make a new TV channel to rival the BBC. So they founded ITV to b e a commercially run channel but they weren't aloud to do what they wanted they set regulations they had to meet. For example when they first started ITV had to show 8 hours of religion programs a week, now it is only one. In 1964 BBC2 was founded and in 1982 Channel 4 was founded which was originally funded from the levy from ITV.

Global Companies
Media ownership is increasingly concentrated into the hands of a small number of companies. 95% of the worlds media is owned by a handful of companies. A number of companies which is owned under the same ownership is called a conglomerate.

Vertical Integration (owning stuff in different sectors)
The tenancy for all the sectors within a media industry to become part of of the same company. EG. Film industry, distribution company and cinemas, these cannot be owned by one person or one company. Many countries have laws against this.

Horizontal Integration / monopolization
The tenancy for a company to try to increase it's market share by either buying rival companies within a sector or by making rival companies go bust by out competing them.

Funding Types:
The Licence Fee
The Licence fee is a system mainly used by the UK which first came around in 1926 to fund the BBC because if the government funded it with tax money the citizens of the UK would complain that the BBC could be potentially bias towards the government.

Subscription
Over the last 10 years subscription services such as Netflix has risen in popularity due for value for money, you can pay less than £10 a month and get access to a very wide range of films and TV shows. This is popular especially in the UK because you don't need to pay a TV licence fee to have services such as Netflix.

One-off payment to own product
Services like Sky offer a service called Sky Movies where you can buy or rent films for a certain price. Methods like this use to be popular but are not so popular anymore because of services such as Netflix and Disney Plus.

Pay per View
Services like Sky Sports offer one of payments for events such as boxing. These tend to be successful because they only normally do this with really popular boxers like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua which attracts mass audiences because their is normally no other way these can be watched, legally anyway.

Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a very popular way to increase a companies revenue. This is different from normal ads because these are places in at specific places and before a specific show. For example if a toy company wants to reach out t a specific audience, eg. kids. They will put their advert just before a popular TV show so it can appeal to as many members of their target audience as possible.

Advertising
This way of funding is the most popular way to do. Most TV shows, ones that are not government run have adverts between their shows or in between running shows and what they'll do is put random adverts in this gap. Companies will pay the TV companies to have their advert put in these gaps and the plan for them is to get as many people to buy the product as possible.

Product Placement
A product placement is where a company pays money to have their product on screen. For example Apple could pay £10,000 to have all of the actors in the production to have IPhones. This way of funding can be very successful because some viewers of films really look up to actors in the films and would want to buy the things they own.

Private Capital
This way of funding is that the producer/director/creator would fund their project themselves.A man called Robert Rodriguez famously funded one of his early films by volunteering himself for science experiments, he raised around £3500 for doing this.

Crowd-funding
Crowdfunding had became a very popular way for start up directors to raise money for their films and TV shows. A website I found called 'www.crowdfunder.co.uk' is a website that crowdfunds all types of projects including TV and film. The film 'Wish I was Here' made in 2013 raised over 3 million dollars from 46,000 people. On average that's around $65 dollars per donation and this film made over 5 and a half million dollars worldwide.

Development Funds
Companies like the British Film Institution (BFI) are known for giving people developments funds. Development funds is a loan system that covers the cost for production, obviously the whole production process for TV and film. The film Great Expectations (2012) was funded by the BFI  and made over 5 million pounds worldwide.

Technical Skills Development

The task we were set with the camera was to record a bad situation. In this production I was the teacher, who gave the students their grades. From this project I have been able to enforce prior knowledge. From this workshop I enhanced my knowledge on how to do a good shallow focus.

The task we got for sound we had to record a page or two of a script we were given by fellow students. With this task our group made it so everyone had a go at everything, so I had a go at being an actor and a sound operator. I learned how to operate basic sound equipment since I didn't have a good knowledge of this before.

For the lighting task we had to undertake a number of lighting tasks (see below). For this task I was the designated model as you can see in all of the photos. The final pictures I've picked I think are very good and have showcased what a few basic lighting procedures can effect your photos. I have enhanced my knowledge with basic lighting because I already had pretty good knowledge of lighting.
